1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

  • Lab Coat:

Always wear a lab coat to protect your clothing and skin from spills and splashes.

  • Eye Protection:

Wear chemical splash goggles or safety glasses when working with chemicals or potentially hazardous materials.

  • Gloves:

Use appropriate gloves (e.g., nitrile, latex) when handling chemicals or potentially contaminated materials.

2. Chemical Handling:

  • Never Taste or Smell Chemicals:

Avoid tasting or smelling chemicals unless specifically instructed to do so, as some can be extremely dangerous.

  • Read and Understand MSDS:

Familiarize yourself with the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) or Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for any chemicals you are working with, as these contain important information about hazards and safe handling procedures.

  • Proper Labeling:

Ensure all chemical containers are properly labeled with the chemical name, concentration, and any hazard warnings.

  • No Random Mixing:

Never mix chemicals unless specifically instructed to do so, as this can create dangerous reactions.

  • Fume Hoods:

Use fume hoods when working with volatile or hazardous chemicals to prevent exposure to fumes.

  • Cleanliness:

Keep your work area clean and free of clutter to prevent accidents and spills.

3. Waste Disposal:

  • Proper Disposal: Dispose of all chemical and biological waste according to established procedures and guidelines.

  • Separate Waste Streams: Use separate containers for different types of waste (e.g., sharps, liquids, solids).

  • Never Pour Chemicals Down the Drain: Dispose of chemicals in designated waste containers, not down the drain.

4. Emergency Procedures:

  • Know Location of Safety Equipment: Familiarize yourself with the location of emergency equipment, such as eyewash stations, safety showers, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits.

  • Emergency Contact Information: Know the emergency contact numbers and procedures for your laboratory.

  • Report Accidents: Report all accidents, no matter how minor, to your supervisor or designated personnel.

  • Know Emergency Exit Routes: Familiarize yourself with the emergency exit routes from the laboratory.

5. General Safety Practices:

  • No Eating or Drinking: Do not eat, drink, chew gum, or apply cosmetics in the laboratory.

  • No Smoking: Do not smoke in the laboratory.

  • Cleanliness: Keep your work area clean and tidy.

  • Handle Equipment Safely: Use lab equipment properly and never operate equipment without proper training.

  • No Horseplay: Avoid horseplay or distracting behavior in the laboratory.

  • Leave Experiments at the Lab: Do not take any experimental materials or samples home.
